5kA solid-state DC breaker for marine applications

At the Electric and Hybrid we will show you our newest innovation: the 5kA solid state DC breaker for marine applications.

Our new DC (or AC) breaker platform is a revolutionary modular system in a front access only push in, pull out design. It allows for easy access and maintenance or to up- down size power ratings. This new platform can be used for current ratings up to 5 kA in a wide range of layouts. Customer specific designs are possible.

5kA solid-state DC breaker

  • Advanced short-circuit and overload protection
  • Nominal voltage: 1.5 kV
  • Nominal current: 5 kA
  • Total fault clearance: 15 – 21 μs
  • Suitable for spinning reserve mode

On Wednesday June 19: 12 AM Aniket presents our response to the maritime industry’s shift toward large-scale electrification. Summarized: together with Astrol we developed a range of 1.5kV, 0.35-5 kA DC solid-state DC breakers. These ultra-fast breakers (breaking time < 10us) enable safe and smart DC systems. Our liquid-cooled, compact isolated rectifier efficiently rectifies AC power into reliable DC power. With its fully customizable blocking diodes, we also meet the increasing demand for reliable charging infrastructures on board vessels ensuring safety during battery charging. As connecting different DC voltage levels in onboard power levels in onboard power grids becomes increasingly important, we’re currently expanding our portfolio with DC-DC converters.

Blocking diode for marine applications

A blocking diode allows the current to flow from inverter system to the battery but prevents / blocks the flow of current to the inverter system thereby preventing the battery from discharging due to reverse current. Blocking diodes are also used for protecting and preventing dangerous situations caused due to arc flashing.

In our business, we often see some problems that occur during the onshore charging phase. For example, there is a charging station on shore that provides power to a pantograph which in turn provides an electrical connection to the vessel. The vessel side of the pantograph distributes the power to 2 switchboards. In these switchboards, blocking diodes can be used to prevent the feeding of short circuit current from the ship installation back to the shore supply.

Liquid cooled rectifier

Liquid-cooled rectifiers utilize a cooling system that involves circulating a liquid coolant, such as water or oil, to dissipate heat generated during the rectification process. The rectifier components, such as diodes and transformers, are typically immersed or in direct contact with the coolant. The coolant absorbs the heat and carries it away from the rectifier, maintaining a suitable operating temperature.
