High-power IGBT and diode modules

Hitachi Energy offers three main categories of high-power IGBT modules and diode modules: insulated, press-pack, and the newly developed SiC-based designs for e-mobility applications.

  • Insulated IGBT modules include the innovative, low-inductive LinPak series and the long-established HiPak lineup, with over 15 years of proven performance and more than one million IGBT modules in operation worldwide.
  • Press-pack IGBT modules, also known as StakPak, represent Hitachi Energy’s flagship technology, delivering record-breaking power ratings up to 5200 V and 3000 A with exceptional reliability.
  • The SiC-based IGBT modules for e-mobility applications leverage silicon carbide technology, offering high current capability, compact design, and extremely low stray inductance, ideal for next-generation electric vehicle systems.

Rapid Switching While Handling High-Power Levels

IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) are widely used in modern power electronics for their ability to handle high voltages and currents efficiently. They combine the low-loss switching characteristics of MOSFETs with the robustness of bipolar transistors. These high-power IGBTs are essential for applications such as motor drives, renewable energy systems, and industrial converters, where fast switching and high efficiency are critical.

Hitachi IGBT modules, building on ABB’s strong semiconductor legacy, are available from 1700 V to 6500 V in single, dual/phase-leg, chopper, and dual-diode configurations. The high-power HiPak IGBT modules deliver low conduction and switching losses, smooth turn-off performance, and a record Safe Operating Area (SOA). The newly introduced 62Pak and LoPak fast-switching IGBT modules offer minimal switching losses, full 175 °C operation, and standard package compatibility for easy drop-in replacement, a proven solution for demanding industrial and traction systems.

Press-pack IGBT modules for applications requiring series connection

The StakPak family consists of high-power IGBT press-packs and diodes in an advanced modular housing that ensures uniform chip pressure across multiple-device stacks.

While isolated IGBT modules are commonly used, press-pack IGBT modules are preferred in applications requiring series connection due to their simple electrical and mechanical integration and their ability to conduct in a short-circuit state, a crucial feature for systems that require redundancy.

Traditional press-packs faced challenges in maintaining uniform pressure across multiple parallel chips, but Hitachi Energy solved this issue with its patented spring technology. The StakPak IGBT features a modular submodule design within a fiberglass-reinforced frame, allowing flexible configurations across various current ratings and IGBT/diode ratios.
