Zone protection

Safe and Resilient DC Systems
In complex DC power distribution networks, zone protection is a key strategy for ensuring safe and reliable operation. It divides a power grid into multiple independent zones, allowing faults to be isolated quickly without affecting the rest of the system. As industries transition toward more electrified and interconnected infrastructures, zone protection has become an essential feature for maintaining uptime, optimizing performance, and protecting critical equipment in marine, industrial, and renewable energy environments.

Why zone protection is essential in modern onboard DC power systems
Modern onboard DC power systems—particularly in maritime and offshore applications—are increasingly designed with closed-bus or ring topologies to improve flexibility, efficiency, and survivability. While DC systems eliminate synchronization constraints and enable higher power density and easier integration of energy storage, they also introduce major protection challenges. DC fault currents rise extremely fast, have low natural impedance, and can flow bidirectionally in ring configurations, making traditional overcurrent-based coordination ineffective.
Zone protection addresses these challenges by dividing the onboard DC network into electrically independent zones, each protected by ultra-fast solid-state DC circuit breakers (SSDCBs). In the event of a fault, zone protection enables rapid detection, directional discrimination, and selective isolation of only the affected zone, while maintaining power to essential loads in the remaining zones. This approach is especially critical for islanded maritime systems, where continuity of supply, compliance with classification society requirements, and survivability under fault conditions are paramount
