Key components of demanding applications

Hitachi Energy’s semiconductors are key components in a variety of demanding applications in markets like power transmission & distribution, industry, mobility and renewable energy. Customers rely on Hitachi Energy’s high quality power semiconductor products and use them in applications in power ranges from 50 kW to 10 GW.

Applications

  • Power transmission and distribution (HVDC, FACTS, STATCOM and others)
  • Industry (medium and low-voltage drives, soft starters, UPSs, high-power rectifiers, excitation systems and others)
  • Renewable energy (converters for pumped hydro, wind turbines and solar)
  • Mobility (rail and subway main and auxiliary drives, trackside power supply / electrical vehicles)

Thyristors with turn-off capability

GTOs (Gate Turn-Off Thyristors) are a type of thyristor with an added feature of turn-off capability. They can be triggered on like a thyristor, but they can also be turned off by applying a negative gate pulse. GTOs are commonly used in high-power applications such as traction systems, energy transmission, and industrial drives.

Asymmetric Gate Turn-off Thyristor

Asymmetric GTOs are divided in two categories: Buffer layer and Standard. Buffer layer GTOs have exceptionally low on-state and dynamic losses. Fine pattern types (5SGF) are optimised for fast switching and transparent emitter (5SGT) for low on-state losses. The Standard GTOs have excellent trade-off between on-state and switching losses.
