Thyristors with turn-off capability
GTOs (Gate Turn-Off Thyristors) are advanced types of thyristors that include an additional turn-off function. Unlike conventional thyristors that require external circuitry to stop current flow, GTOs can be switched off by applying a negative gate pulse. This built-in capability allows for precise and rapid control of high power, making GTOs ideal for use in high-voltage, high-current applications.
Hitachi Energy GTOs are widely used in traction systems, power transmission, and industrial drives, environments that demand both robustness and efficiency. These GTO devices provide reliable switching performance, improved safety, and reduced energy losses compared to traditional thyristor designs. Thanks to their ability to handle extreme voltage and current stresses, GTOs remain an essential technology in the field of high-power conversion and control. For applications requiring even faster switching and lower losses, Hitachi Energy also offers IGCTs.
Asymmetric Gate Turn-Off Thyristors
Asymmetric GTOs are divided into two main categories: Buffer Layer and Standard types. Buffer Layer GTOs feature exceptionally low on-state and dynamic losses. Fine-pattern types (5SGF) are optimized for fast switching, while transparent-emitter designs (5SGT) focus on minimizing on-state losses. Standard GTOs provide an excellent trade-off between on-state and switching losses, making them versatile for various industrial and traction applications. Each GTO type is engineered for specific performance needs, ensuring high efficiency and consistent reliability in demanding electrical environments.
